Tackle and Gear for Cobia Fishing
The right gear is crucial in cobia fishing. Due to their size and strength, a medium to heavy action rod with a reel capable of holding plenty of lines is recommended. When it comes to line, a braided line with a heavy 80 to 100lb leader will stand up to the cobia's rough handling. As for bait, live pinfish, eels, and crab are particularly enticing, but artificial lures can also yield results.
Techniques and Tips for Catching Cobia
- Sightfishing- which is spotting and casting directly to the fish. Looking for them around structures such as channel markers, crab buoys, or even swimming rays and sharks can be very productive.
- Baiting & Waiting- Chumming near large chunks of structure such as rock piles, wrecks, and reefs. Patience is key.
